Microsoft, the tech giant, has decided to set up a new team named MAI Superintelligence and work on a project called the ‘humanist superintelligence.’
The project was recently announced by the head of Microsoft’s AI division, Mustafa Suleyman, who will also lead this project, and stated that the tech giant has planned to invest ‘a lot of money’ in this.

First things first, what is a humanist superintelligence?
Well, let’s put it like this. It is a kind of advanced AI that will solve real-world problems and complex challenges.
However, there’s a catch! This new AI by Microsoft won’t be anything like those ‘infinitely capable generalist’ AIs that the other tech giants are building. Instead, Microsoft’s humanist superintelligence would prioritize ethical boundaries and human well-being! What this means is, the new AI would be safe, along with being beneficial.
The project head has also stated that the AI is expected to bring over some significant breakthroughs, especially in the fields of healthcare, education, and renewable energy.
As mentioned above, Mustafa Suleyman, the co-founder of DeepMind, as well as Inflection AI, is in charge of the whole thing. And he has some really big plans and expectations for this upcoming project. In an article, the head of Microsoft’s AI division states, “We are doing this to solve real, concrete problems and do it in such a way that it remains grounded and controllable.”
Not just that, but he also admits, “We are not building an ill-defined and ethereal superintelligence; we are building a practical technology explicitly designed only to serve humanity.”
So, we can safely say that what Mr. Suleyman is trying to build isn’t just a mere product that will make our jobs easier. Rather, he is steering the course of the entire civilization with this project!
Microsoft’s artificial intelligence is probably the first-of-its-kind project that the tech giant is working on.
And that’s exactly why they have formed a brand-new, dedicated division and picked out a handful of the top minds from the internal team. Not just that, but the department would also be hiring new joiners for this project. Karen Simonyan has been appointed as the chief scientist of this new team, which will be known as MAI Superintelligence.
That being said, Microsoft isn’t the only tech giant working towards superintelligence! Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has recently established its own Meta Superintelligence Labs. And they are spending billions to recruit experts for their project. In fact, sources suggest that Meta is offering signing bonuses of a whopping $100 million!
However, upon asking Mr. Suleyman about Microsoft’s further plans for the recruitment process, he didn’t divulge any specific details about it. He just stated that the tech giant plans to hire some of the top-notch AI scientists from across the globe.

So, the initial goal of the MAI Superintelligence team is to come up with robust and helpful AI companions that can assist people in education and certain other fields. For instance, another one of the significant areas where humanist superintelligence is supposed to help is healthcare. The project head has predicted that in the next two to three years, we could expect AI to grow capable of doing expert-level medical diagnosis. This approach can help diagnose complicated medical issues and also successfully detect diseases at an earlier stage. Mr. Suleyman states, “We’ll have expert-level performance at the full range of diagnostics, alongside highly capable planning and prediction in operational clinical settings.”

Talking about this ethical AI development by Microsoft, Mr. Suleyman says, “The history of humanism has been its enduring ability to fight off orthodoxy, totalitarian tendencies, pessimism, and help us preserve human dignity, freedom to reason in pursuit of moral human progress. In that spirit, we think this approach will help humanity unlock almost all the benefits of AI, while avoiding the most extreme risks.”
